He served in the military as a guard at the war crimes trials at Nuremberg, Germany. Following his military service, he worked as a mechanic, construction worker and a machine operator at Delano Hosiery. He also served as Register of Deeds.
He was a member of First Baptist Church and the ScrapIron Sunday School Class.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Johnson Hampton; parents, Cooper and Cora Yates Hampton; and a daughter, Connie Irene Hampton
He is survived by daughters: Mary Anne Patrick of Chattanooga and Judy Hampton of Benton; grandchildren: Judith and Mike Nelson of Soddy Daisy, Jennifer Crews of Chattanooga and Tim and Michelle Patrick of Harrison; and great-grandchildren: Lauren and Chase Putnam of Raleigh, N.C., Haley and Keith Painter of Kansas City, Mo., Mary Ellyn Dupre of Johnson City, Michael Nelson of Soddy Daisy and Katie Patrick and Carrie Patrick, both of Harrison.
A memorial service will be held Monday, April 1, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Higgins Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends Monday, from 1 to 2 p.m., prior to the service.
