George Samuel “Sam” Stokes, Sr., 80, a resident of Cleveland, went home to be with the Lord Friday, March 22, 2013, in a local health care facility.

He was the son of the late Frankie Addie Goodwin Stokes and William Houston Stokes. He was preceded in death by his wife, Naomi Young Stokes; his daughter: Shirley Ann Stokes; and three brothers: Louis Stokes, Melvin Stokes and Paul Stokes.

He retired from Bishop Baking with 16 years of service and also served in the Army National Guard. He enjoyed going to church, reading the Bible, and talking to anybody about the Lord.

He was a member of the Washington Avenue Baptist Church.

Survivors include his daughter, Alice Earls and her husband Lou Wallie Earls, of Cleveland; son, George William “Punkin” Stokes and his wife, Patricia Ann “Pat” Stokes of Cleveland; three grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; his sister, Nellie F. McElroy and her husband Ricky McElroy, of Valparaiso, Ind.; brothers: James C. Stokes and his wife, Mary, of Gary, Ind. and Billy A. Stokes and his wife, Kay, of McDonald; lifelong friends: Martha Bostic, Charlie and Joanie Lopo; and several nieces and nephews.

The Remembrance of Life service will be conducted Monday, March 25, 2013, at 2 p.m. from the North Ocoee Chapel of the Jim Rush Funeral Homes with the Rev. Beecher White and the Rev. Ronnie Ledford officiating.

Interment will follow in the Sunset Memorial Gardens with Robert Stokes, Jeff Stokes, Jeff Frazier, Charles Stokes, Tim Floyd and Charlie Lopo serving as pallbearers. Jerome Stokes, Alex Stokes, Rob Bain, Bruce Barnes, Jason Barnes and Lou Earls will serve as honorary pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 9 p.m. today.
