SODDY-DAISY — Although the game’s 21 hits were almost evenly split, Bradley Central had a distinct advantage in the run department in Tuesday night’s District 5-AAA battle in Soddy-Daisy.

While the Bears had just one more hit (11-10) than the hosts, they were able to break open a tie game with eight runs in the fourth, fifth and six innings on their way to an 11-5 victory over the winless Trojans.

“We got some key two-out hits, plus we got some runs early and were able to keep adding to it to get some separation,” declared Bradley head coach Travis Adams. “We played some good defense and Jacob (Maynard) did a good job on the mound and set the tone for us.”

The two teams play again this evening at 7 p.m. at the McKenzie Baseball Complex to complete the district home-and-home series.

After a scoreless opening inning, Bradley (4-2, 3-0 District 5-AAA) got on the scoreboard first Tuesday evening with three runs in the top of the second. Maynard singled before Jacob Barnes walked. Both came around to score when a Trojan throwing error after a bunt allowed them to circle the bases. Jacob Fowler, who reached on the error came in with the third run on a two-out single by Cal Pickel.

After Soddy (0-4, 0-3) put a pair of runs on the board in the bottom of the inning and another to even the score in the third, the Bears got a two-out hit from Brently White in the top of the fourth to plate Fowler and Ryan Blair to take the lead for good.

Bradley put a 3-spot on the board in the top of the fifth with Blair delivering a two run single and Baylor Terrell adding a run-scoring hit and then did the same in the same in the sixth with Fowler and Terrell serving up two-out RBI hits and Pickel drawing a bases-loaded walk to bring in the final Bear run.

Fowler went 3-for-5 at the dish, plus he reached on an error and scored four times in the victory. Terrell went 2-for-4 and plated a pair of teammates.

Despite giving up nine hits, five walks and five earned runs, Maynard (2-0) picked up his second pitching victory of the season, striking out seven Trojans while going 6 1/3 innings on the hill before giving way to sophomore Ty King for the final two outs.
