Tripletts lead Polk Co. mercy-rule blowout

SWEETWATER — Polk County opened the new softball season with a mercy-rule victory over District 5-AA foe Sweetwater Tuesday evening.

The girls from Benton posted a 20-3, six-inning road victory

Senior Lydia Triplett went 5-for-5 at the plate, including four doubles and drove in seven teammates to lead the 16-hit Polk County offense

Jordan Triplett notched the pitching victory with a six-strikeout performance, issuing no free passes while facing 18 batters in four innings of work.

Lily Cuzzort went 2-for-3, including a home run, scored three times and drove in a trio of teammates in the victory. Kaitlyn Williams went 2-for-4 with a double, while Ashlyn Johnson was 2-for-3 for the victors.

Samantha Bowling “went yard” for Sweetwater, which scored a run in the first and two more in the third inning.

Polk put six runs on the board in its first at bat, three more in the third and fifth frames, plus an 8-spot in the fourth inning.

Polk County will travel to Dayton this weekend to play in the Tiger Classic. The Lady Wildcats open play Friday evening with games against McMinn County and Sequoyah at 6:30 and 8 p.m.
