The Lady Colts eighth-grade volleyball team won the Cleveland Middle School Raider Rally volleyball tournament Saturday.

The Lady Colts won the Junior Varsity Raider Rally last year as seventh-graders and were determined to win the varsity tournament this year. They did just that.

In pool play the Lady Colts defeated Rhea Central 25-11, 25-12 and Hixson 25-20, 25-11. They were defeated by CSLA 22-25, 24-26.

The Lady Colts were in a three-way tie in their pool, but because of fewer points scored against them they were first in their pool.

The eighth-grade Lady Colts defeated Chilhowee 25-18 and 25-8 in the first round of the tournament. The semifinal match was very close with a determined Hixson team wanting revenge from earlier pool play, but the team pulled out a victory in three games by scores of 22-25, 25-19, and 15-5.

The finals proved to be a great match against CSLA, who had earlier beaten the Lady Colts in pool play. Coach Pruett challenged the team after they lost in pool play to go and still win the tournament. All eight of the Lady Colts had a goal of winning the tournament for the second year. It was a very close and hard fought match, but the Lady Colts brought home first place by defeating CSLA 25-23 and 25-18.

Coach Pruett said, "I am so proud of this team for fighting to win this tournament. They all played with heart and soul, and they were so pumped the last match that I really wanted this victory for them."

Tournament serving stats: Kate Essenburg had 42 service points; Dani Sowder had 40 service points; Julia McGuire had 36 service points; Emma Kate Brown had 36 service points; Halle Hughes had 24 service points; and Kaley Walker had 15 service points.

The Lady Colts record is 11-2. They will play at home Tuesday against Rhea Central sixth grade at 4:30 p.m. with the seventh grade going at 5:30 and the eighth grade at 6:30. The Lady Colts will travel to Cleveland Wednesday to play at 4, 5, and 6 p.m. They will end the week at Lake Forest on Thursday again at 4, 5, and 6.
