The Walker Valley Mustangs freshmen recently completed their season with a 62-50 victory over Bradley Central for the District 5–AAA freshman championship. The Mustangs won all three tournament games by double digits including a 66-55 win over Cleveland High in the semifinals.
The Mustangs won the championship with a balanced attack. Four players scored in double figures vs. Bradley led by Josh Jones with 22 points. Jacob Herd added 12 with Wes Wagner and Matthew Meadows recording 11 each.
The game was tight at the half with Walker Valley leading 23-21. The Mustangs outscored the Bears 18-5 during the third period to take control with a 15-point lead. Bradley Central made a furious comeback attempt behind Bradley McCurdy’s 3-point shooting but was never able to get closer than six points. Good free-throw shooting down the stretch sealed it for Walker Valley.
In the semifinals at Cleveland, the Mustangs led 40-34 after three quarters, but started the fourth on an 8-0 run to take command. The Raiders never got closer than eight points as Walker Valley handled the pressure and made free throws late.
Josh Jones was the Mustangs’ leading scorer with 22 points including a perfect 8-for-8 at the free-throw line. Wes Wagner also reached double figures netting 11. Other Mustangs contributing to the balanced attack were Matthew Meadows with nine, Jacob Herd with eight, Ben Clark and Josh Davis scored six points each and Peyton Hodges chipped in four. Jones, Meadows and Clark had seven rebounds each to pace the champs.
