He was born on Jan. 13, 1922, in Johnsonville, N.Y.
He was a veteran of World War II and served in the Army Air Corp. He was a businessman for many years in real estate in New York, Florida and Tennessee.
He was a member of Westwood Baptist Church.
He was devoted to his friends and family. He enjoyed being a long-term supporter of the Disabled American Veterans, a Cub Scout leader, a volunteer firefighter in New York, an election poll worker in Florida and many other civic activities.
He spent time traveling, taking cruises and spending winters in Florida. He kept up to date on current events around the world and financial news. He was a resident of Garden Plaza Independent Living and had many friends there and throughout the area.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl William and Theresa Rollwitz Kagel; sister, Margaret Kagel Kirch; brothers: Arthur Kagel and Herman Kagel; and his first wife, Phoebe Kagel.
He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Ina Cloud Kagel; sister, Alice Kagel Swertinski; son, George Arthur Kagel; granddaughter, Michelle Kagel; grandson, George Kagel; great-grandson, George William Kagel; several nieces and nephews; stepdaughters: Jane Lucchesi and Laura Hixson; and stepgrandsons: Alex Lucchesi and Jeffrey Lowe.
The funeral will be held Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with Pastor Jim Caywood officiating.
Interment will follow in Cookson Creek Cemetery with military honors. Richard Butler, Don Conley, Tom Cloud, Jeffrey Lowe, Alex Lucchesi and Lawrence Stokes will serve as pallbearers. John Paul Douglas, Mark Hixson, Mitchell Lyle, David Satterfield and Madison Trewhitt will serve as honorary pallbearers. A white dove release ceremony will conclude the service.
The family will receive friends 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
The family thanks all doctors and staff involved in Mr. Kagel’s care at SkyRidge Medical Center and Hospice of Chattanooga.
