The Cleveland Middle School seventh-grade Lady Raiders are happy to be home after a long string of games on the road recently.
After suffering their first loss to Ocoee Middle early in the season, the Lady Raiders redeemed themselves defeating the seventh-grade Lady Colts, 40-36. Lauren Stutzman drained five threes to lead all scorers with 17 points. Point guard Brooke McCurdy tossed in 13 points, snatched seven steals and dished six assists. The Lady Raiders also got five points from Lauren Langford, three from Erin Stutzman, and two from Sydnie Callahan and Braylee Franklin.
OMS was led by Maci Clark and Lauren Lay with 10 points each.
In the seventh-grade Lake Forest Invitational Tournament, CMS defeated the Lake Forest Lady Bruins, 52-17. McCurdy scored 13, Lauren Stutzman 12, and Braylee Franklin tossed in nine points.
For Lake Forest, Gatlin scored eight points.
The Lady Raiders suffered only their second loss of the season in the finals of the Lake Forest tournament to a very physically tough Meigs team. Although the Lady Raiders stayed with Meigs the entire game, it was not to be. The CMS Lady Raiders lost 38-40 and were tourney runner-ups.
McCurdy scored 20 and Lauren Stutzman nailed 13 markers.
“We lost the battle of the boards 16-33. You just can’t expect to beat a good team if you can’t win the boards. However, that just shows you how hard we did play to try to make up for our lack of rebounding. We played until the last second and we had the opportunity to win. You can’t ask for more than that,” stated coach Kelli Fulton.
The Lady Raiders are now 18-2 on the season.
