Very soon new banners will be mounted on light poles on the Cleveland/Bradley County Greenway. Down will come the 25 banners that have marked the 10-year anniversary of our Greenway and up will go 50 new ones with a new style and new messages.

The anniversary banners stretched from Raider Drive south to Willow Street, but this new set of banners will go two more miles north to the current terminus at Mohawk Street. Thanks in advance to Cleveland Utilities for their assistance in mounting the new banners!

Of the 25 original sponsors of banners, 23 expressed a desire to keep their sponsorships for a new two-year period. In addition, more than 20 new sponsors have come on board to have a presence on our Greenway.

There are a wide variety of organizations on board from eateries like Hardee’s and Jittery Joe’s coffee. First Baptist was the lone church, but is now joined by North Cleveland Church of God. Both Cleveland City and Bradley County schools have a banner, as do both our local colleges, Cleveland State and Lee University. Industries like Mars Chocolate and Whirlpool renewed, while Lonza came on board this time.

Several banks are supporting the Greenway with a banner and they include Southern Heritage, Bank of Cleveland, FSG, First National, SouthEast Bank & Trust and First Tennessee. A wide variety of small businesses representing many services in our community have bought banners. The list of sponsors also includes a good mix of professionals such as accountants, orthodontists, pharmacists, surgeons, optometrists and insurance agents.

SkyRidge Medical Center has bought a banner this time, as have four of our local non-profits: United Way of Bradley County Inc., the Cleveland Family YMCA, Boys and Girls Clubs of Cleveland and Habitat for Humanity of Cleveland. There is also going to be a banner from the Half Warriors of Cleveland, a group of runners in our community who use the Greenway as a training ground for running half marathons across the country.

The new banners will be a different style than what is currently in place and will come with four different messages that tout the good things of our community. They include:

1. Celebrating Better Health! Nothing encourages Greenway patrons more than knowing what they are doing is good for them.

2. Celebrating Our Heritage! We have a lot of history in Cleveland and Bradley County, from the Cherokee nation to billion-dollar industries.

3. Celebrating Our Community! We have a lot to be thankful for and the generosity of our citizens shows it.

4. Celebrating Our Quality of Life! This one sums it all up.

These slogans and the list of sponsors for the new banners truly represent all aspects of our community and demonstrate how so many recognize the value of our Greenway. I hope everyone can find time to take a stroll down the Greenway and support those businesses and organizations that support our Greenway!
