He was born in Floyd County, Ga., on July 6, 1927, son of the late George Elmer Beard Sr. and the late Fennie Mae White Beard.
He was also preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his son, Gladys Louise Mitchell Beard, on Jan. 8, 1968; by his wife, Mary Ellen Farrer Beard, on April 5, 2005; by a great-grandchild, Christopher George Beard; and by two sisters: Barbara Ann Beard and Betty Lee Brown.
He was veteran of the United States Army, having served in World War II and in the Korean War. He retired from the Fairbanks Co. in Rome, Ga., following more than 36 years of employment. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 5 in Rome and was a former member of the Honor Guard.
He was a member of Stanfield Baptist Church in Georgetown, following a number of years of membership at Silver Creek United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his son, Wayne Beard, and his wife, Sharon, of Rome; three grandchildren: Brent Beard, and his wife, Sara, of Silver Creek, Jody Beard and Michelle Beard, both of Rome; a brother, James Beard, of Georgetown; and nieces and nephews.
The service will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at 2 p.m. in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Eric Geren officiating.
Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens with the American Legion Post No 5 Honor Guard extending military honors.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home, 3002 Maple Road, Rome, Ga., on Tuesday, from noon until the service hour. At other times, they may be contacted at their respective residences.
