Both WVHS squads capture the District 5 championship, plus the Mustangs claimed the Region 3 title as well earlier this week, while the Lady Mustangs are the region runners-up.
The Walker Valley girls traveled to Middle Tennessee Saturday to battle Region 4 champion Columbia Central in sectional action, but came out on the short end of a 21-6 final to bring their season to a close.
The Mustangs will host a substate pairing against Region 4 runner up Smyrna Monday at Leisure Time Bowling.
Lady Mustang juniors Chelsey McCormack (175 average) and Amber Houchin (153), along with sophomore Alexis Rutledge (163) and Mustang senior Brendon Baker (183) have all qualified for the state individual tournament, to be held Thursday and Friday at the Smyrna Bowling Center. The team tournament will begin Friday afternoon and run through Saturday.
Houchin and McCormack led the Walker Valley effort Saturday in Columbia with a 508 and 495 series respectively. Houchin rolled a 210 high game, while McCormack was right behind with a 207.
The Walker Valley boys used a 327 pin fall advantage (3,569-3,242) to win the District 5 title by defeating McMinn County 22-5, with a trio of 600 series leading the victory.
Jacob Baker topped the winning effort with a 668 series, rolling games of 245, 223 and 200. Brendon Baker helped out with a 611 tally, including games of 224 and 206, while Caleb Zanoska posted the high game of the match with a 247 on his way to a 609 total.
Briton Helton and Nathan Kirby gave strong support with 579 and 572 totals respectively, including each with a 214 high game, while Tanner Kincaid rounded out the scoring with a 530 series.
The Mustangs defeated Soddy-Daisy 21-6 in the Region 4 championship earlier this week behind a school record 716 series from Kirby. Posting three of his team’s four 200 games, Kirby rolled a match-high 258 to go along with a 236 and a 222.
Helton (568), Brendon Baker (557) and Kincaid (537) helped out with 500 series as Walker Valley outpinned the Trojans 3,339-3,050. Soddy-Daisy has to travel to Region 4 champ Columbia Monday for its sectional match.
The Lady Mustangs claimed their district crown by defeating Chattanooga Central 24.5-2.5.
McCormack led the title victory with a 603 series with games of 217, 205 and 181. Rutledge helped out with a 540 series, with 220 pins coming in her finale.
Sondra Combs posted the match’s high game with a 235 on her way to a 516 tally, while Houchin helped out with a 479 total.
In the region championship, Soddy-Daisy earned the right to host a sectional match with a 20-7 victory. The Lady Trojans entertained Smyrna Saturday.
Houchin and Combs topped the Lady Mustangs with a 520 and 505 series respectively, while Rutledge (477), McCormack (469) and Kara Davidson (458) lent support.
