Cleveland showed few ill effects from the short layoff, breezing to wins over Cookeville and Cordova by scores of 59-10 and 75-3 Friday night.
"We took some time off over the break. We didn't get a lot of time off, we went to the tournament in Oceola (Fla.), so we didn't have a ton of time. But, they got ample amount of time off," said Raiders coach Jake Yost. "We also give them days off here and there to give them time to make sure they are rested and feeling good."
The Blue Raiders were feeling good enough to get six pins against a scrappy Cookeville team in the opening match.
Tristan Blansit got the first pin for Cleveland at 106 pounds. Haden Hamilton (132), Joel Simpkins (138), Aaron Oliver (145), Josh Hamilton (152) and Ethan West (182) followed with pins.
Chris DeBien earned a major decision at 113 as did Austin Stevison at 120.
The Cavaliers earned their only points at 126, 120 and 285 pounds.
"We did well. Cookeville is a tough team. They always come and fight hard and I'm glad we responded and also fought hard," said Yost.
After a short break, the Raiders were back on the mat for a quick match with the Wolfpack. Cordova gave up forfeits in half of the 14 weight classes while the Raiders picked up five more pins in the win.
Sean VonPotts rebounded from a loss against Cookeville with a pin at 170 pounds. Oleg Stukanov, who won by forfeit against the Cavaliers, earned a pin at 195. Koran Kennedy, who dropped a close decision in his first bout of the evening, bounced back with a pin at 285.
Blansit and West also earned their second pins in as many tries for Cleveland.
The Blue Raiders mixed up their lineup in Saturday's tournament at Chattanooga Central in a move designed to further prepare for February's region and state duals and traditional tournaments. Cleveland will be back on the mat in regular season action Thursday against the Bears.
"We are sending kind of a mixed lineup to Central. We are going to give some of our younger guys some experience. Then we have a really big dual Thursday here with Bradley," Yost stated.
"Our whole schedule is focused on getting ready for February. Whether it's a weekend with three dates in a row or giving guys a weekend off. There is a reason behind everything we do. That reason is February, and it may mean giving guys extra time off or extra time on the mat because they need it for shape, their timing or whatever reason."
