Cleveland had little trouble picking up its 13th win on the wrestling mat Tuesday night with a 51-30 win over McCallie.

In a match dominated by the Blue Raiders, the Blue Tornado trailed 51-18 after 12 bouts before getting a pin at 285 pounds and a forfeit at 106 to close out the match.

“We had several guys out sick and injured and we had some younger guys in the lineup tonight. I know McCallie had a few guys out of the lineup, too. It is just that time of the year when people are kind of beat up. But, overall I thought we did well. We stepped up and fought hard. I was proud of our effort,” said Cleveland coach Jake Yost.

The Raiders, ranked No. 2 in the state behind Christian Brothers, got pins from Chris DeBien at 113, Austin Stevison at 120 and Taylor Bishop at 126 to get the night started.

“At 113 pounds we wrestled a really tough kid. It was 0-0 and Chris stepped up and put an arm bar in and pinned him,” Yost said of Cleveland’s opening win. “Really up and down the line the guys did a good job tonight.”

Cleveland will try to pick up its 14th win of the season against No. 3-ranked and perennial wrestling power Soddy-Daisy Thursday.

McCallie countered with pins at 132 and 138 pounds to cut Cleveland’s lead to 18-12.

Cleveland came back with pins in four of the next six bouts with Joel Simpkins winning by forfeit at 152.

Oleg Stukanov battled McCallie’s Jay Roberts in the only match that went the distance. Stukanov, after leading 9-3 to start the third period, missed a major decision when Roberts pulled off an escape at the buzzer to make the final score 11-4.

Karon Kennedy earned Cleveland’s final win of the night with a pin at 220 pounds.

“We’ve got some areas to work on. We’ve got to work on single leg finishes and closing the gap on people when they are kind of backing up and trying to get away from us,” said Yost.
