John James Sahlberg, 90, of Athens, died Wednesday night, Dec. 5, 2012, at Athens Regional Medical Center.

He was a native of Orlando, Fla., and was the son of the late Eric and Evelyn Wait Sahlberg. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Peggy Brown; and a brother, Harold Sahlberg.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Athens, where he was an active member of the Barnabas Sunday school class.

He was a graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he was a member of the Phi-Kappa Tau fraternity. He was an active member of the Senior Citizens, where he made wood crafts for the gift shop and was also in involved in the delivery of Meals on Wheels.

He was associated with TVA as an electrical engineer for 35 years, and was a 50-year member of IEEE, and served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and the Korean War.

He is survived by wife, Anna McIntire Sahlberg, of Athens, one daughter, Deborah Sahlberg of Stuart, Fla.; one grandson, Eric Brown of Chattanooga; two sisters-in-law: Margaret Fisher of Athens and Shirley McIntire of Cleveland; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 5 p.m. today, Dec. 7, 2012, in the chapel of Smith Funeral & Cremation Services of Athens with Dr. Jason Clark officiating.

The committal service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Cleveland.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 5 this evening at the funeral home prior to the service.

Honorary and active pallbearers will be the Barnabas Sunday school class, Maurice Young, Jeff McKay, Robert McIntire and Charles Hefron.

The family suggests memorials be made to First Baptist Church of Athens, 305 Ingleside Ave., Athens TN 37303.
