Lois Glass opened the program with the devotion.
After the luncheon, Flower introduced the 2012 Cleveland Bradley County Retired Teacher’s Scholarship recipient: Caitlin Lee Geren, daughter of David and Caroline Geren.
Geren read the essay she submitted as part of the application process for the scholarship. She said family members, who were and are teachers, have inspired her to become a teacher and to enter the field of education.
Working with young children is a goal she wishes to pursue and, as she addressed the retired teachers sitting before her, she said, “I hope to become one, like you.”
Geren thanked the group for the years they had invested in students’ education and for the opportunity afforded her through the scholarship.
She is a 2012 graduate of Walker Valley High School and participated in the dual enrollment program with Lee University while in high school. She will enter Lee University as a full-time student this fall.
During the business portion of the meeting, Carolyn Goins, secretary, read the minutes of the last meeting. Harold Reno, treasurer, presented the treasurer’s report and membership report.
He announced that a memorial gift had been sent to Shiloh Baptist Church in memory of Margaret Arnold. Lois Glass asked all to remember the family and the contribution she made to education.
Flower announced she will be the liaison between the local retired teacher’s organization and the Bradley Cleveland Public Education Foundation with Lynn Voelz, as executive director. Joy Yates was elected as the new treasurer to replace Reno.
The next scheduled meeting will be Oct. 11 at 11:30 a.m. at Westwood Baptist Church. The local association meets bimonthly and membership is open to any retired teacher.
