Covenant Baptist Church is hosting a benefit singing, dinner, and auction for 12-year-old Haley Brooks on Friday, Aug. 17.

Events began at 4:30 p.m. at Covenant Baptist Church in Calhoun. From 4:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. a chilli dinner will be served for donations.

Children may receive face paintings, kid tattoos, and other activities for donations outside the church. An Elvis Presley tribute artist will perform during the chilli dinner in Covenant’s fellowship hall.

The auction will begin at 5:30 p.m. Baskets, goods, and certificates from local businesses like Cracker Barrel and Chick-fil-A will be auctioned off. These include free oil changes and bowling passes.

Lisa Laney, organizer, said donations for the auction are still welcomed by both businesses and residents.

Benefit singing will begin at 7 p.m. Laney said Answered Prayer and the Washington Avenue Baptist Choir will be performing. According to Laney, the singing has no definite end time.

A blood drive by Blood Assurance will be occurring from 2 to 7 p.m. outside of Covenant Baptist Church. Free T-shirts, snacks, and drinks will be provided for donors. Compatible donated blood will go toward Haley Brooks’ blood bank. Donors must be at least 17 years old, or 16 years old with parental consent.

All donors must weigh at least 110 pounds. Donors will be entered into the August giveaway, a 2012 Kymco Agility 125 scooter with an estimated value of $1,799.

Brooks suffers from a rare blood disorder called Diamond Blackfan Anemia. She is currently a patient at Vanderbilt after undergoing a bone marrow transplant and chemotherapy.

Brooks will remain in the hospital for more than 100 days. Proceeds will go toward hospital bills and travel expenses for the weekly Nashville to Vanderbilt commute.

Covenant Baptist Church is located at 249 Calhoun Road in Cleveland. For more information contact Lisa Laney at 423-790-6208.
