Miller told the Cleveland Daily Banner on Wednesday she has been notified Bradley County residents have begun receiving “prank” text or email messages informing them they have failed to report for jury duty and will be fined $500 and serve a 30-day jail sentence for failing to appear.
“Victims are being contacted via text and/or email, and told to call a number to receive a message,” Miller explained in a community alert released Wednesday.
She said the phone numbers are 704-319-7254 and 704-319-7242.
“This ‘prank’ is happening all over the country ... [and we] are urging citizens not to call these numbers and fall victim to this prank,” Miller stressed.
In Bradley County, those who have been summoned for Jury Duty, and who fail to appear, are subject to a $500 fine; however, in this case they would be contacted by Miller via conventional mail.
“Cleveland and Bradley County residents would never receive a text or email concerning their jury service,” Miller said.
Questions may be directed to Miller, or to her office staff, at the Bradley County Courthouse office at 423-728-7218.
