Volunteer Energy Cooperative said today that 800 customers were without power as of 7:30 this morning. A series of storms toppled trees and power lines. Residents in the Hopewell community were affected, according to officials with VEC.
Dean Watson of Cleveland Utilities reported a small number of Cleveland power customers were affected as line fuses blew and had to be replaced. Watson said on-call crews worked throughout the night to restore service.
A section of Highway 30 in Polk County was shut down because of recent fires, according to officials at the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
• Bradley County Fire Rescue officials continue to investigate the cause of a fire which forced the evacuation of residents at a local apartment complex.
According to BCFR Chief Dewey Woody, several firemen and two residents were treated for heat-related symptoms suffered while fighting a fire at Smokey Mountain Apartments on U.S. Highway 64 Thursday evening. Sweltering temperatures caused problems for the firefighters as the high for the day reached 105 degrees.
Eight apartments were affected by fire or water damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation and an exact cause is unknown, according to Woody.
