CLEMSON, S.C. — Nicholas Lloyd Peterson of Cleveland has been named to the president’s list at Clemson University for the spring 2012 semester.
Peterson is majoring in biological sciences.
To be named to the president’s list, a student must achieve a 4.0 (all A’s) grade-point average.

ETSU bestows degrees at
spring commencement
JOHNSON CITY — East Tennessee State University conferred some 1,704 degrees in two recent spring commencement ceremonies. Local students receiving awards included:
From Charleston were Kim-Lei Lowery, a master of science in nursing and Riley E. Simpson, master of business administration.
From Georgetown was Ashley R. Hoffman, bachelor of arts. From Cleveland were Cadey L. Campbell, bachelor of science; Christopher D. Crick, bachelor of science; Christy R. Crick, master of arts; Marissa L. Hensley, bachelor of science in nursing; James I. Mills, bachelor of science; Kayla M. Sadler, bachelor of science; Emily K. Samples, master of education; Amanda L. Smith, bachelor of science in nursing; Megan E. Smith, bachelor of science in nursing.
In addition to awarding bachelor’s and master’s degrees, as well as graduate certificates, ETSU bestowed doctor of education, doctor of public health, doctor of audiology, doctor of philosophy , medical doctor, and pharmacy degrees on successful candidates.
The featured speaker was Dr. Richard G. Rhoda, executive director of the Tennessee Higher Education Commission.
Local resident qualifies for dean’s list at Belmont University
NASHVILLE — Emily Michele Jones of Cleveland qualified for the spring 2012 dean’s list at Belmont University. Eligibility is based on a minimum course load of 12 hours and a 3.5 GPA with no grade below a C.
She is the daughter of David and Karen Jones and the granddaughter of Larry and Edie Madden of Cleveland and Donald and Gene Jones of Dublin, Ga.
Jones is majoring in nursing and hopes to become a nurse practitioner. She is also a member of the Belmont Bruins women’s soccer team.

Local student receives Comcast scholarship for leadership
Nashville — Kayla Curbow of Polk County High School was recently named a 2012 recipient of the annual Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program at a luncheon at the Adventure Science Center in Nashville.
"I appreciate Comcast's recognition and support of Tennessee's future leaders,” said Secretary of State Tre Hargett. “Together Comcast and these students are making a positive impact on Tennessee."
The Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program provides one-time $1,000 scholarships to students who strive to achieve their potential, who are catalysts for positive change in their communities, who are involved in their schools, and who serve as models for their fellow students.
The philosophy behind the program is to give young people every opportunity to be prepared for the future, to engage youth in their communities, and to demonstrate the importance of civic involvement, and the value placed on civic involvement by the business community.
