CSCC implemented the Teaching Career Fair last year. The purpose of the fair is to provide an opportunity for anyone interesting in learning more about what is involved in being an adjunct instructor at a college.
Participants will be able to drop off a resume, meet the various deans and talk to the people in the different departments.
CSCC also decided to take it a step further by inviting the local K-12 school system because many times, there are people that are unable to teach at the college level because of their credentials, but would be able to teach at the K-12 level.
“The Teaching Career Fair provides those who are interested in learning how to pursue a career in education to learn how to get started making that goal a reality,” stated, Dr. Tommy Wright, interim vice president for Academic Affairs.
“Whether one has a heart and desire to teach at the K-12 level or to teach at a college campus, this fair will provide the opportunity to gain insight and if they meet the requirements, to find out about the application process.
“For those who are interested in teaching the students at Cleveland State Community, it is important to keep in mind that a master’s degree in a related area plus 18 graduate hours in the discipline you wish to teach is required. We encourage those fresh out of college, as well as those who might be starting a second, third or fourth career path to attend this event.”
In addition to showcasing CSCC’s own teacher education program, Cleveland State also wanted to invite local four-year institutions to attend the Teaching Career Fair so students that are already enrolled in the CSCC program, but plan on transferring to a four-year institution, can explore their options.
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and Cliff Yager, the executive director for Tennessee Troops to Teachers, will also be on hand to provide information to participants. The Troops to Teachers program transitions former military personnel into the teaching profession.
