A Lee University student whose family survived last year’s tornadoes is stepping up to collect needed items for victims of the March 2 tornado.

Freshman Alison Ledford is organizing a donation drive for needed items for tornado victims, which she will give to The Salvation Army.

The donation drive will be held at Rick’s Barber and Style (3102 North Ocoee St.) in the North Ocoee Plaza this Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Ledford said she plans to hold the event each Saturday until April 7.

She’s calling the drive Helping Affected Neighbors of Disaster.

“Last year when the tornadoes hit they hit the area that my family was in,” Ledford said. “I saw how quickly my family could have been taken from me.”

Ledford said her family was in the Dalton Pike area.

Last year, Ledford volunteered with the relief teams. That was when she was a senior in high school.

Now, as a pre-med biology major with an almost full-time job, Ledford said she has found it impossible to join a relief team.

Ledford said she still wanted to do something, so she decided on a donation drive.

Her focus for the drive is to replace items individuals lost in the tornado.

According to Cleveland Salvation Army administrator Sgt. Ruthie Forgey, the most needed items after a disaster are basic hygiene items, clothing, baby items, nonperishable food, towels, bed sheets and laundry detergent.

Monetary donations may be made directly to The Salvation Army at the Inman Street location. For more information about making a monetary donation, contact Salvation Army at 423-308-3467.
