Deputy William Dallas Longwith was dismissed from the department in January based on allegations he wore boxer shorts (underwear) outside his home in August 2011 and again in December 2011.
The Sheriff’s Office notified the Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission of Longwith’s dismissal and requested his certification be revoked. The POST Commission scheduled a hearing on Thursday, but the Sheriff’s Office pulled its request from the agenda on Tuesday.
Longwith said in an article published Thursday, “Sheriff Ruth has been untruthful throughout this process and knows I have done nothing wrong,” Longwith said. “That is the reason he withdrew the decertification request.”
Ruth said Thursday afternoon, in response to Longwith’s comments, that Longwith was “justifiably terminated and I take offense that he publicly called me untruthful and a liar when he knows what he did was wrong.”
He said the request for decertification by POST was withdrawn because the agency has changed its policy to decertify people only when a criminal offense is involved.
“When they notified us of this ... we withdrew our request,” Ruth said.
