He retired from Brown Stove Works after 34 years of employment then returned on a part-time basis several years ago.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was of the Baptist faith.
He loved to help people and was always willing to lend a hand. He had a passion for working on old cars. In his later years he loved to travel, and especially enjoyed riding through the mountains. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Calvin Johnson and Eliza Lea Riggs Johnson; his wife, Billie Jean Spurlin Johnson; one son, John “Bug” Johnson; and brother, Ray Johnson.
Survivors include one son, Michael Johnson (Sherry); two daughters: Donna Lawson and LouAnn Baggett (Jeff); daughter-in-law, Jennifer Johnson, all of Cleveland; eight grandchildren: Michael Johnson II, Staci Johnson, Stephen Lawson II, Dustin Lawson, Corey Baggett, Callie Baggett, Chloe Baggett, and Jessica Johnson; four great-grandchildren: Autumn Johnson, Chelle Johnson, Mikaila Johnson, and Miracle Johnson; and special friend, Peggy Carver.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 17, 2012, at Grissom Funeral Home with the Rev. B.L. Kelley officiating.
Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens with military honors.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
