Cleveland State Community College will be hosting its first Teaching Career Fair on June 15, from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Foundation Room of the George L. Mathis Student Center.

“The purpose of the fair is to provide an opportunity for anybody interesting in learning more about what is involved in being an adjunct instructor at a college,” stated Dr. Jerry Faulkner, vice president for academic affairs.

“This is the perfect time for them to come by, meet the dean and talk to the people in the department. Also, if they want to drop off a resume at that time, they can.”

Faulkner said he got the idea for the teaching career fair from a magazine article about another college who had had a similar event, but the more he thought about the idea, he decided to take it a step further.

“As I thought more about it, I thought the school systems in our area might have some needs, as well. There may be some people that come to this fair, that, because of their degree or credentials, are unable to teach for us, but could teach for the school systems, so we decided to also invite the local K-12 school system.”

In addition, Faulkner thought this would also be a good time to showcase the teacher education program at CSCC and for students already enrolled in the CSCC program, but plan on transferring to a four-year institution, he thought it would be beneficial to invite local four-year institutions such as the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and Lee University so they could also showcase their teacher education programs.

Faulkner said Cliff Yager, the executive director for Tennessee Troops to Teachers, will be on hand to provide information about this program that transitions former military personnel into the teaching profession.

“From a college perspective, we can always use good instructors, and I feel like there's a lot of people out there who have always thought about teaching at a college, but have never known how to go about it, so this is a way of giving them that information. For those considering a career in education, this is the chance for them to get information about the education programs, as well.”
