Walker Valley High School will be celebrating 370 Class of 2019 graduates during its commencement scheduled for Thursday evening.
The celebration will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the school’s football stadium. In addition to honoring all who are graduating, school officials are celebrating a valedictorian and two salutatorians this year.
This year’s valedictorian is Evie Grace Medley, who is graduating with a 4.0 grade-point average and earned a score of 32 out of a possible 36 on her ACT exam. She plans to attend Belmont University and major in biochemistry and molecular biology.
Sharing the title of salutatorian are Kylie Elizabeth Squires and Viktoriya Vladimirovna Marushka.
“These young ladies have maintained a grade average of greater than 99.75 for all classes over their high school career,” Principal Nat Akiona said. “We are very proud of their collective and individual achievements.”
Squires earned a 4.0 GPA and an ACT score of 35. She will attend the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, where she hopes to major in mathematics and chemical engineering.
Marushka earned a 4.0 GPA as well, along with a 32 ACT score. Her goal is to earn a degree in nursing from Lee University.
Many other graduates were also honored during a Senior Night awards ceremony Tuesday. College representatives were on hand to award $8.6 million in scholarships to the Class of 2019 — not including the Tennessee Promise scholarship.
“We have graduates who have committed to schools all over the United States,” Akiona said.
A total of 258 students are graduating with a GPA of at least 3.0 and an average ACT score of 23.44. WVHS also has 41 seniors graduating with a 4.0 GPA and an average ACT score of 29.24.
The average ACT score among all 370 graduates is 21.61, and 33 graduates achieved scores of 30 or higher.
In addition to Thursday night’s commencement, graduates will also be honored during a baccalaureate tonight at 6 in the WVHS auditorium.
