To The Editor:

This is in regard to the recent letter by Ms. [Mary Epperson] Chappell.

Ms. Chappell, if you’re going to make such sweeping statements about who is a Christian and who isn’t, then you need to get your facts correct. I’ll just make a list:

1. Abortion: The right to an abortion is the law of the land. This is the result of the Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade. This decision was handed down in 1973. Who was in charge in 1973, Ms. Chappell? A well-known Republican named Richard Nixon ... so going on your logic, the Republican Party gave us abortion, not the Democrats.

2. Russia: I’m getting tired of hearing about Russia myself. I’d like more time spent on health care, tax reform, etc. [These are] things that impact people’s lives on a daily basis. The Democrats didn’t cause this problem. Trump and his underhanded campaign did, and I doubt if it goes away any time soon.

3. Gay Rights: The Democratic Party has always tried to defend the rights of all people, not just the well-off. They have [supported] women’s rights, minority rights, equal pay, fair housing laws, the right to form unions ... the list goes on.

Tell me Ms. Chappell, why is it a person who is gay shouldn’t have the same protection under the law that you enjoy? Is that just the way it works in “Trump Land?” What you need to do is get some of your cronies together and go to a good Republican sheriff [and] start putting people in stocks on the Courthouse Square. That will show them who’s boss.

I have no problem saying I’m a Democrat. I’m proud of it. I also support groups such as the Southern Poverty Law Center. [This is] a group that has upheld basic human rights for years.

Also, since you’re on a first-name basis with the Lord I would ask you to sneak me into the Pearly Gates. But, I don’t think the prayers of the self-righteous hold a lot of weight.

I also forgot. I have a tattoo of a peace sign. I might get spotted pretty quickly and get you in trouble.

Well, as Alanya Segura would say, “Pa’lante.”
