Woodford named 2018-19 Science and Math Tucker Scholar

Lee University’s Anna Woodford was named 2018-19 Tucker Scholar in Natural Science and Mathematics. She is a senior health science major with a pre-physician assistant emphasis from Knoxville.
“This scholarship is such a testament to the Lord's faithfulness,” said Woodford. “I feel so honored to be recognized as a Tucker Scholar, and am incredibly grateful to the professors who have supported me and contributed to my academic success.”
Woodford is a member of the Lee University women’s basketball team and has been awarded a Lee University NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball scholarship. She is a 2015-18 academic honor roll student and was a nominee for the Hicks Scholar, though she had to decline on account of NCAA compliance regulations.
In addition to her place on the women’s basketball team, Woodford is a member of Chi Alpha Sigma, a National College Athlete Honor Society nominee. She also took a missions trip with Score International to the Dominican Republic, and is a leader with the Bradley County Young Life Ministry.
“I have had Anna as both a student and teaching assistant, where she excelled in both roles,” said Dr. Joseph Daft, assistant professor of biology and health science. “She is a model student for both our department and Lee. Anna will be greatly missed here, but we know that she has many exciting things ahead of her.”
After graduation this May, Woodford plans to begin Lipscomb University’s physician assistant program, in Nashville.
The Tucker Foundation Endowed Scholarship in Science and Mathematics is awarded to a senior majoring in the field of natural science or mathematics. Candidates for the Tucker Scholarship are nominated by faculty and chosen based on outstanding academic achievement. Consideration is given to financial need, and priority is given to students who graduated from an East Tennessee high school.
The Tucker Foundation Scholarship was introduced in 2009 as part of an institutional initiative to enhance natural science and mathematics at Lee University. The endowed scholarship was established by the Tucker Foundation on behalf of Mr. and Mrs. Summerfield K. Johnston, Jr.
