Winters named 2017 Distinguished Alumna for HDCOE

Karen Winters was awarded the 2017 Distinguished Alumnus Award for Lee University’s Helen DeVos College of Education, at a department breakfast during Homecoming earlier this month.

“Karen Winters is known throughout our region and across the state as a consummate professional,” said Dr. Bill Estes, dean of the HDCOE. “Her commitment and passion for the profession is undeniable, and this sustained, committed dedication has been an example for us all.”

A resident of Cleveland, Winters serves as a parent coordinator at Bradley High School. Since, graduating from Lee, she has dedicated almost 50 years to education.

Winters has been an educator at Valley View Elementary, Bradley Junior High, and Bradley Central. Additionally, she has served as an exemplary educator consultant at the Tennessee Department of Education and a Bradley County transition coordinator.

Winters has been named Teacher of the Year twice for Bradley High School and Delta Zeta Tau Alumna of the Year for Lee.

During her time at Lee, Winters was a member of Lee Singers and Delta Zeta Tau. She also served as a Viking cheerleader, a homecoming court representative, Parade of Favorites representative, and later, director of POF.

“I want children to believe that school is a good place to be,” said Winters. “It is an inviting, caring, and nurturing environment that says to students, ‘This is a safe place for you … safe to ask questions, safe to make mistakes, safe to believe in yourself, and safe to dream big dreams.’”
