MARYVILLE — Battling Mother Nature to play four games Saturday paid off with a trio of victories for Walker Valley, in TSSAA Hall of Champions games at William Blount High School in Maryville.
The hot-shooting Mustangs remained unbeaten with victories over Clinton (81-66) and the host Governors (63-52), while new head coach Drew Lyness got his first victory at the Lady Mustang helm, beating the Lady Dragons (85-62), but came up short against the tough Blount girls (62-43).
Walker Valley will return to the court tonight as Baylor comes to "The Stable" for a pair of varsity games. The boys will start the evening off at 6, with the girls playing the nightcap at 7:30.
"Baylor boys are leaving to go out of town right after, so they wanted to get an early start," Lyness texted Saturday to explain the flip-flop.
The WV squads will be back in Maryville at the end of the week, this time at Heritage High School, for a Thanksgiving Classic event. The Herds will play the host squads starting at 3 p.m. Friday, then return Saturday at 1:30 with the Mustangs (3-0) facing Maryville before the Fillies (1-2) face Knox Webb.
Clinton won the 3-point shooting contest 12-11, but Coach Will Campbell's Stallions galloped away with the 15-point win.
Walker Valley raced out of the gate for a 20-12 edge at the first pole, but then had to hold off the "fire-breathers" 26-25 in an explosive second stretch.
The Mustangs sealed the victory with a 22-12 edge in the third furlong before coasting to the back stretch.
Junior Hayden Moore and senior Jake Smith ripped the chords for 21 points apiece for the victors. Moore drilled 7-of-7 long-range bomb attempts for his tally, while Smith drained a pair in a dozen-point opening quarter.
Seniors Braden Davis, Reid Berger and Blake Campbell helped out with 11, nine and eight points respectively for the Bradley County boys, the latter of which nailed a couple of 3-balls himself.
Jaxon Garner drained a half-dozen 3-pointers while posting a game-high 22 points to pace Clinton (0-2). Chase Lockard netted 17 points, including four from distance. Trevor Bryant nailed a trey in his 10 points in the loss.
Walker Valley won all four periods, jumping ahead 15-10 by the first horn and pulling up 31-22 at the intermission.
The Mustangs had just a one-point edge 14-13 in the third frame, but then impeached the "office-holders" with their best quarter, 19-15, to wrap up the session.
Blake Campbell rode roughshod over the hosts with a 30-point performance, including two of the three Mustang 3-pointers, plus draining 8-of-9 free throw opportunities.
Senior Noah Duprey and Berger pumped in a dozen points apiece in the victory.
Tanner Prats paced Blount with 11, while Trey Clemmer and Cameron George netted 10 each.
LADY MUSTANGS 85
LADY DRAGONS 62
After a tight (17-14) opening eight minutes, Walker Valley galloped away in the second period to build a 40-28 advantage,
Clinton, which had dropped its Saturday opener 59-53 to the hosts, fought back to pull back within single digits by the third break, but the Fillies finished strong with a 26-11 run in the final frame.
Lee University softball signee Laney Harris led the way for the Lady Mustangs with a career-high 28 points, drilling four 3-pointers along the way. She netted 10 of her 16 first-half points in the second frame, plus went 4-for-4 at the free throw line.
Junior Michele Benson pitched in with 16 points, including 13 in the second half, with a pair of long-range bombs.
Senior post Tasia Roberts netted 13 points, while junior Emma Bentley added 10. Abbie Caldwell, a junior guard, collected nine points.
Sarah Burton and Naryah Sanders led Clinton (1-2) with 18 and 12 points respectively.
LADY GOVERNORS 62
LADY MUSTANGS 43
In the second game of the day for both teams, the host Blount squad built a big lead before holding off a late rally for the win.
The unbeaten Lady Governors (3-0) netted 14 points in both of the first two quarters for an 11-point (28-17) halftime advantage, before securing the victory with an 23-12 run in the third period.
Walker Valley fought back to win the final eight minutes 14-11, but couldn't climb out of the hole.
Roberts paced the Lady Mustangs with 11 points, while Harris was held to just nine, with only one 3-pointer.
Sophomore point guard Cayce Davis added eight points, with a pair from beyond the arc for the Herd.
Jenny Kallenberg, who drilled a trio of treys, and McKenna Myers led the victors with 17 and 15 points respectively.
