Tonsie Maxwell is retiring after 30 years at the Bowater Credit Union.

Credit Union members are encouraged to drop in on her last day at the Calhoun branch on Wednesday, Jan. 15.

Maxwell began her career with the Credit Union in 1990. She started as a temporary employee through a local agency.

She remembers after the interview telling the agency, she wasn’t sure how she did. The woman said she must have one well, because they wanted her to start Monday.

After serving well in her temporary role, Maxwell accepted a full-time position. That decision has benefited many over the years – members and staff alike.
Maxwell has served as vice president of member services, while also serving as Calhoun Branch manager and Keith Street branch manager.
She has also been the leader of the IRA Team for many years, guiding the certification of multiple Certified IRA specialists throughout the credit union.

When asked what she liked most about her job, Maxwell chose her work with IRAs.
“I have made a lot of friends over the years from working with these accounts.”
But she also knows what a difference she’s made at crucial times for members, when a family member passes away.
“I hope I was able to help them through a stressful time in making changes to their accounts with as much ease as possible,” Maxwell said.
One IRA specialist Maxwell trained referred to her as the “IRA queen.” She said Maxwell offered careful training and support while teaching IRAs.
She was surprised on her 50th birthday by a black-bedecked team and office.   She connived with a co-worker to pull pranks on one of the Gold Travel Club trips. She’s made lifelong friends and the credit union expects to see her frequently as a friend and member in the coming years.
