A local running company is hoping to start a new Thanksgiving tradition by allowing runners to burn off some calories before enjoying their holiday dinners.

The first Thanksgiving Day 5K run and walk event will begin Thursday, Nov. 24, at 8 a.m. at Tinsley Park.

The event, hosted by Terra Running Company, was planned after another local Thanksgiving-themed run was canceled.

Brittany Durkin, co-owner of Terra Running Company, said those who run the business are “invested” in the local running community and want to make runners will still have their festive fun.

“We work hard to promote local races, get runners active, and couldn't let people we know go without a local race on Thanksgiving,” said Durkin.

An event called the Cleveland Turkey Trot 5K, organized by national company All Community Events, Inc., had been planned for this year.

However, what was to be a first-time event was “postponed until 2017.” Notice of this year’s cancellation was given on the event’s official website and Facebook page, and runners were promised refunds.

“We were forced to postpone the event because we did not have enough participants register in order to put on a high quality event,” said Brandon Schnaufer, spokesman for All Community Events, Inc.

Despite that company’s assessment of its registration numbers, Terra Running Company’s owners said they still want to offer Clevelanders the chance to take part in a Thanksgiving run.

The Thanksgiving Day 5K will start and end at Tinsley Park. The 3.1-mile run/walk will be professionally chip-timed.

The cost for taking part in the 5K is $20 per person. There will also be a free “kids dash” run at 8 a.m., prior to the actual race.

Pre-registration for the event will continue until Wednesday, Nov. 23, and registration will also be available at the event.

“We are excited to celebrate Thanksgiving with our friends here in Cleveland and thank the town for a great first year of business and growing the running community,” said Durkin.

Brittany and David Durkin opened Terra Running Company at 2548 Georgetown Rd. in February of this year. They have been involved in many local races and put on the Tall Betsy 6K in October. They also plan to host the Cleveland Half Marathon in May 2017.
