With Cleveland Halloween legend Tall Betsy being over 6 feet tall, organizers of a race to benefit several local nonprofit organizations decided not to stage a traditional 5-kilometer run, but rather a 6K.
That event will take place on Saturday on the Cleveland/Bradley County Greenway, but the site will also be unusual, as it will not travel south, but north from the Greenway staging area near the playground to Mohawk Drive, then back to the starting point.
The race is being coordinated by a new business in town — Terra Running Company.
“We wanted to do something to help these nonprofits and had heard about Tall Betsy, and thought it would be a great way to raise these funds,” said Brittany Durkin of Terra. “We moved here and heard about the legend and thought, ‘Why not combine the two?’”
That led to Durkin and her husband, David, checking to see if they could use the Tall Betsy legend to base their race on. They got the OK from Jones Management, and Brittany Durkin said it is possible that Allan Jones, who helps promote Tall Betsy, might be at the race to read the poem about the Halloween legend.
The nonprofit organizations that will benefit from the race, and actually be a part of it, are Girls on the Run, the Advanced Photographic Solutions Relay for Life team, the Cleveland High School cross country team and the local Young Marines group.
In the spirit of both Halloween and Tall Betsy, “Each of these organizations will be placed along the route of the 6K race and will try to spook runners, without touching them, in their specific areas of the Greenway,” she explained.
While proceeds from the race will benefit equally all four entities, there will be a vote after the race on which of the organizations had the best “fright area,” and that organization will receive an additional amount of funds from the proceeds.
At the end of the race, there will be music provided on the Greenway stage, and there will also be a costume contest. Food will be provided to those who sign up for the race, with registration fees at $30 each.
Each participant will also receive a nice long sleeve shirt that has on the back “Don’t Let Tall Betsy Catch You,” and a coupon from Dos Bros Mexican Grill, a sponsor of the event.
Check Into Cash is sponsoring the music, while other sponsors of the event, along with Dos Bros, include Cooke’s Food Store, Mars Chocolate, Chick-fil-A and Lupi’s.
“We hope to see lots of people running at this event, and you can register at the Greenway that evening or register online by going to www.RunTallBetsy.com,” Durkin said. Pre-registration for the event, which begins at 6 p.m., will take place from 5 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
