The Tennessee Highway Patrol on Sunday released details regarding a deadly crash on Interstate 24 in Rutherford County involving a Cleveland resident.

The accident took place on Friday.

According to the TDP, James Black, 49, of Cleveland, as well as a front-seat passenger, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Black was driving a 2016 Nissan Maxima westbound on I-24, who for undetermined reasons,  drove into the grass median and crossed into the eastbound lanes of I-24, the THP reported.

The passenger side of Black's vehicle was then struck by 41-year-old Matthew Copperoll’s 1998 Dodge Ram that was traveling east on I-24.

The driver of the pickup truck was transported to St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital by “a good Samaritan,” according to the THP.

A left rear passenger in Black’s vehicle was transported by EMS ground to Vanderbilt’s emergency room. In addition, a right-rear passenger was transported by EMS ground to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital.
