To The Editor:
This open letter is a strong rebuke to our so-called "county representative," Mr. [Dan] Rawls, who insists on flying the American flag upside down in his political signs — a gregarious sign of disrespect to our nation and all of our U.S. veterans.
Mr. Rawls, did you know that the red in those stripes stands for the blood of our relatives who stood with George Washington and others for freedom? When Betsy Ross was commissioned to sew this flag in my home region of then-rural Pennsylvania, and our Mennonite farmer family (both father and son) were serving in the Revolutionary War and post-1776 Continental Army, that flag became a symbol of our nation!
No one is allowed to take those stripes and stars for granted, dear sir, even a county representative.
What would the governors, and all the citizens of those 50 states which each star represents, have to say about your political campaign and pathetic defense of showing the flag upside down, just to "win votes" in Bradley County?
My husband also had relatives from North Carolina who braved cold and starvation to fight the Revolutionary War for our freedoms! When my dear father returned home from World War II, after seeing the death of fascism in Italy, and all those brave Navy personnel who fought and saw their fellow sailors die in the U.S. Pacific, do you think the flag was flown upside down? No way!
If elections have degraded to this low of level, you do not represent us at all in Bradley County. As hard-working citizens, our taxes were just raised in this county [city of Cleveland property taxes], but most of our salaries were not! So please, don't go spouting off your rhetoric in the "Letters to the Editor" about how bad and horrible America has become.
You were not elected to audit the sheriff or others, but to represent the citizenry of our large Sixth District. You have caused trouble and wasted taxpayer dollars, and you will be voted out soon.
Why not go to Pakistan where they burn our flag almost every week or travel to Southeast Asia, as I did as a professor representing America, where in the largest Muslim country in the world — Indonesia — they spit on our flag and call us by vile names. It was not easy to represent our great nation internationally at the many conferences I have been invited to speak at.
It is harder still to come home and see our flag graphically displayed upside down in your campaign signs.
Remember what the stars and stripes stand for, or have someone teach you that Betsy Ross, when she finished sewing that first flag in Philadelphia, forever showed us that it is the red blood — like Christ's blood that was shed on Calvary — that was at the heart of our nation, and still is today.
