Chattanooga — Townsend Atelier announces visiting instructor Seth Haverkamp will conduct a portrait-painting demonstration at the southside studio and school on Friday, from 6:70 to 7:30 p.m. at the Arts Building, 301 East 11th St., Chattanooga. Light refreshments will be available.

The artist demo and talk will be open to the public, free of charge. Artists, art lovers and students are encouraged to attend. Haverkamp will be painting from a live model while answering questions from the audience and talking about his painting process. This is his third visit to Chattanooga to teach at Townsend Atelier.

Haverkamp is an award-winning, contemporary, figurative painter who has been drawing as long as he can remember. He graduated with a bachelor in fine arts from Carson-Newman College after a year each at the Cleveland Institute of Art and Memphis College of Art. In 2005, he studied with internationally known artist Nelson Shanks at Studio lncamminati.

Upon leaving lncamminati, he moved to Northern Virginia, where he had a number of one-man shows and studied with renowned artist Robert Liberace.

Haverkamp has done many commissioned portraits, but says his chief subject and love is his wife and children. He said they always take him to new heights of creativity and beauty. It was a portrait of his daughter Echo that earned him Best in Show in the 2008 Portrait Society of America’s International Portrait competition.

Other honors include a certificate of excellence in the 2011 show.

Also in 2011, he was a finalist in the Art Renewal Centers International Competition.

Recently, Haverkamp won “People’s Choice Award” in the 2013 Portrait Society of America’s International Portrait Competition for a painting of his daughter Essie as well as “Top Honors” in the same competition in 2013 and 2014. He was a finalist and also received an award from the 2013 ARC international painting competition, in the portraits category.

Haverkamp is represented by Haynes Gallery in Nashville and Thomaston, Maine, and Rutledge Street Gallery in Camden, South Carolina.
