The Pajamas for Your Mama pajama drive is returning to Cleveland on April 1.
Catherin Patten of the Love Nancy nonprofit organization said the group hopes to surpass last year’s 200 pounds of donations with the drive ending on April 30.
Love Nancy serves as an organization to provide care packages for dementia and Alzheimer’s disease patients, as well as respite care for their caregivers.
Seven local businesses will be participating as drop-off locations this year.
“We’ve delivered to 20 residents and hopefully we can triple that after this pajama drive,” said Patten, who started Love Nancy in memory and honor of her late mother, Nancy Patten, who had Alzheimer’s.
The drive is collecting new or like-new pajamas and is also accepting new or like-new slippers, socks, blankets and housecoats. Patten said organizers are collecting both male and female attire and are looking to collect a variety of sizes.
Patten said pajamas for any season will be accepted.
“This year and each year following, the pajama drive will be a part of the CAREavan program,” Patten said.
Patten hopes to expand to serve more individual patients and caregivers not in facilities through the CAREavan program.
“We provide care goods and a social hour as ... a respite for caregivers,” Patten said of the program.
The CAREavan program also visits facilities that serve Alzheimer’s and dementia patients to bring gifts to the residents and treats for the staff to show their appreciation.
Last year, the donations for the pajama drive were given to residents of a nursing home facility, an assisted living facility and individuals.
“One of the ladies wrote me afterward from one of the assisted livings here in town to let me know how wonderful it was after I had delivered the pajamas … they were able to set it up like a store so their residents could ‘shop,’ Patten said. “So it was fun, especially for the ones who can’t get out anymore.”
In the future, Patten wants to have the CAREavan stationed at places in town where caregivers can come and pick up items.
This years Pajamas for Your Mama donation collection points are Cleveland YMCA, Sara’s Hallmark, Duff Studio, Perry’s Petals, Cleveland State Nursing Department, Village Bake Shop and Signature Health Care of Cleveland
