Mechanical issue forces evacuation at Charleston

A mechanical issue Tuesday afternoon at Charleston Elementary School caused the school to be evacuated. No injuries were reported.

School officials announced on Twitter that, “a compressor issue caused the alarm & has now been fixed,” and the fire department had cleared the building as safe.

“Many thanks to our teachers, students, & parents for a safe and smooth dismissal this afternoon!” the tweet stated. “No homework tonight as students can retrieve their belongings in the morning!”

A few hours later, a post was made on the school’s Facebook page, repeating that information along with a note that “We are very grateful for the immediate response by our Bradley County and Charleston first responders!!”

The Bradley County Sheriff’s Office posted on its Facebook page that authorities were on the scene Tuesday afternoon at Charleston Elementary School after a report of smoke and a fire alarm.

“No active fire has been found, but the building remains evacuated out of an abundance of caution,” the post stated, adding “Parents wishing to pick up their children can sign them out at the staging area across from the school.”

Classes at Charleston Elementary School resumed this morning.
