The Rev. Martha A. Looper, DCT, 91, answered her eternal and upward call on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2018, in a local health care facility, following a few months of age related illnesses.
She was born on Jan. 15, 1926, in Titusville, Fla., in her family’s migrant worker’s citrus tent. She was gloriously “born again” in a corn crib in Highlands, N.C., at age 15. She served in public ministry for more than 60 years as a very learned and eloquent speaker and minister of the Gospel. She was the co-founder of the Women of Ruth International, a lady’s auxiliary and para-church ministry. She served as its international director for more than 20 years, conducting numerous lady’s conferences in the United States and Latin America.
She co-pastored congregations with her husband for more than 30 years in the states of South Carolina and Tennessee.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, the late John and Creesy Jenkins; her mother, father and stepmother, Nellie Jenkins-Richardson, and Newt Richardson and Ludille Boyters-Richardson; her late husband, the Rev. John H. Looper; one son, Carzell Joseph Looper; two sisters: Bertha Mae Boyters-Sanders and Edith McDonald; one brother, Donald Richardson; four grandchildren: Tony Looper, Kenneth Looper, Bradley Looper and Chris Looper; and by two daughters-in-law: Jean Scarborough-Looper and Donna Looper.
She is survived by six children: Robert H. Looper of Chattanooga; Doris McKinney (Roger) of Greenville, S.C.; James C. Looper (Darlene) of Cleveland; Leona Kent (James) of Cleveland; John A. Looper (Jean) of Cleveland, and Garren E. Looper (Debbie) of Cleveland; 11 grandchildren: Peggy Bryant, Pamela McCroskey, David Looper, Faith McCroskey, Greg Looper, Jackie Looper, Shannon Hammontree, Christy Dale, Tiffany Absher, Kevin Looper and Nicole Looper; one sister, Betty Timmerman of Powdersville, S.C.; one brother, Paul Richardson of Greenville, S.C.; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members in Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Virginia and throughout the Carolinas.
Her Celebration of Life service will be conducted at 7 tonight, Jan. 10, 2018, at the Restoration Fellowship Family Worship Center, located at 211 Trewhitt Drive, S.E. (directly behind the Waterville Golf course).
The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. at the church, prior to the evening funeral. Dr. John A. Looper, lead pastor, will be officiating and giving the eulogy/sermon address.
The interment will take place at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Piedmont, S.C., on Thursday at 2 p.m., with family members serving as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers.
