Man dies in Polk County plane crash

An Athens man died in a small plane crash in Polk County north of Benton Saturday afternoon.

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Department, the incident occurred around 2:45 p.m. Saturday in a field off U.S. Highway 411.

The pilot, identified as 61-year-old Gary Wayne Church, was pronounced dead at the scene. Church was the only occupant of the plane, which was described as a small, single-engine, fixed-wing aircraft.

Witnesses stated that the crash occurred shortly after takeoff, PCSO reports said.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office, West Polk Rescue, Rural-Metro Polk County EMS, Tennessee State Parks and Tennessee Highway Patrol responded to the scene.

The Federal Aviation Administration will be investigating the crash.
