Life Care Center of Cleveland gets Doris Williams moving again

Doris Williams wasn’t able to do anything for herself after having gastrointestinal surgery.

 “I was immobile,” Williams remembered. “I couldn’t walk, I couldn’t move my head — I couldn’t do anything.”

Williams came to Life Care Center of Cleveland for rehabilitation on Sept. 15, and at first she didn’t want to participate in her physical, occupational and speech therapy sessions. Therapists encouraged her to put her effort into recovery so she could return home.

“She overcame that and really started to progress,” said Tara Coe, occupational therapist.

Coe worked with Williams on the daily tasks she would need to do to be able to take care of herself at home, helping her along the way but pushing her to do as much as she could.

Meanwhile, the physical therapy team (Rocco Sarli, physical therapist, and Kelly Newbould, physical therapist assistant) helped Williams work on her mobility, starting with strengthening her legs and core for standing and slowly taking the first steps. Now she is able to walk back and forth across the bridge that connects the rehab gym to the skilled nursing facility.

Brittney Furgerson, speech therapist, worked with Williams on swallowing, since she was having a hard time eating and drinking. Williams started out with a modified diet with liquids having to be thickened to the consistency of honey. Through swallowing exercises and treatments with VitalStim® electrical stimulation, Williams is now eating and drinking normally again.

“The staff is wonderful,” said Williams. “They’re all good people.”

On Nov. 16, Williams was able to return home with her caregiver, who the therapists had trained in how to care for her. She needed minimal to moderate assistance with her activities of daily living.

Life Care Center of Cleveland, located at 3530 Keith St., N.W., is one of 27 skilled nursing and rehabilitation facilities in Tennessee managed by Life Care Centers of America.
