Lee Theatre Presents An Evening of Comedy

Lee University’s Theatre will continue its 2017-2018 season by exploring a humorous path with a presentation of “An Evening of Comedy: A Collection of Short Plays” by David Ives. Performances will take place at 7 and 9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3, and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4 and Nov. 9-11 in the Buzz Oates Theatre, located in Lee’s Communication Arts Building.

“As we were building our season, we were looking for something that would provide a variety of roles for our students and a comedic piece for our audience,” said Dr. Christine Williams, play director and associate professor of theatre at Lee. “The idea to do a collection of short plays was intriguing because it allows for a larger number of students to perform and introduces our audience to the wide variety of plays that exist.”

This critically-acclaimed, award-winning evening of comedies combines wit, intellect, satire, and just plain fun.

“David Ives is a master of short and comedic plays, and I think, while this experience will be unique, our audiences will enjoy this evening of short plays produced at a level consistent with our usual season of full-length productions,” said Williams.

Audiences will witness a hilarious sextet, whether played together or separately. According to The New York Times, “The writing is not only very funny, it has density of thought and precision of poetry.”

“Short play festivals are very popular in larger cities but it is less common to see them performed in smaller community and regional theatres,” said Williams. “We thought this would be an excellent addition to our ongoing mission to introduce our campus and larger community to the large array of options in the world of dramatic literature.”

Tickets will be available at the Box Office in the Communication Arts Building Monday-Friday, 3-6 p.m., during the week leading up to each show, and one hour before curtain time. Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for children, seniors, and students. Tickets will also be available for purchase online at leeuniversity.edu/theatre. Reserved seating will be available through this online process.

Lee Theatre recommends viewing “An Evening of Comedy: A Collection of Short Plays” for ages 10 and up.
