For the second straight month, Lee men's golfer Beck Burnette has captured the Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Month honor.
The Blairsville, Georgia, native has wasted no time coming into the lineup and making his presence felt for the No. 7 Flames. At the beginning of October at the Golfweek NCAA D2 Invitational, a rain-shortened 36-hole event, Burnette lead the charge for the Flames with an opening round 3-under 69 and final round even-par 72 for a 141 total and third place finish. As a team the Flames placed second.
Two weeks later at the Matt Dyas Invitational, hosted by West Georgia, Burnette finished ninth (70, 71, 70, 211) and helped lead Lee to another second place finish.
"Beck is off to a good start; he was a steady presence in all four fall tournaments for us. He's showing what he's capable of, but there's still plenty of room for improvement. He's just scratching the surface of what he can do," said Lee head coach John Maupin.
Burnette and the Flames will open up the spring season on Feb. 24 in Dade City, Florida, at the Saint Leo Invitational.
Sophomore Carson McKie claimed the Gulf South Conference Player of the Month award.
McKie, a native of Hoover, Alabama, led the Lady Flames with a third place finish (73, 72) at the LeeAnn Noble Memorial to wrap up the fall on Oct 15. As a team the No. 12 Lady Flames placed third.
"Carson had a very good fall for our team. She put a lot of work in over the summer and it paid off," said Maupin. "You can see the growth in her game, in particular the control she's showing out on the course. I'm excited to see her keep building on this."
McKie opened the month of October with a 153 and a 19th place finish at the Golfweek NCAA D2 Invitational from Howey-In-The-Hills, Florida.
McKie and the Lady Flames will open up the spring season on Feb. 24 in the Battle at Hilton Head.
