FINDLAY, Ohio — The Lee women's golf team opened play at the NCAA Division II National Championship with a 320 total and is in 10th place after round one at the Findlay Country Club.

Despite winds swirling up to 25 mph, Anne Hedegaard fought through the conditions to lead the Lady Flames with a 76. The Danish freshman is currently tied for 13th.

Caroline Moore followed with a 79 after just missing an eight-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole while Sam Burrus (82) and Haverly Harrold (83) carded the final two scores that counted towards the team total. Annika Gino (90) opened the event with the very first championship tee shot in Lee history as she split the fairway on No. 1.

"Anne did a great job today and she carried herself with great body language all day and that was just a very solid round," said head coach John Maupin. "Caroline played her last three holes at 1-under and that was a big help as well.

"It was a very challenging round out there today in that wind. The course played much different than the practice round. It's expected to play similar tomorrow though, and there are some adjustments we can make to give ourselves better scoring opportunities in round two," added Maupin.

Team race

The No. 2 Dallas Baptist Patriots showcased why they are one of the top teams in the country posting an 11-over 299 to hold a 10-stroke lead on the field. South Region champions and No. 1 ranked Barry University is second at 309 while Indianapolis (310), Henderson State (311), West Texas A&M and St. Mary's (Texas) round out the top five.

The No. 11 Lady Flames will open round two just 11 strokes out of second place. Missouri-St. Louis and Augustana University (South Dakota) are tied for seventh at 318. Rollins College is just ahead of Lee in ninth place with a 319 total.

Arkansas Tech (325) and Grand Valley State (337) round out the 12-team field.

"The reality is we have 3/4 of the tournament left, so there is a lot of golf left. We've got an opportunity to do some good things tomorrow," noted Maupin.

Medalist race

Four players are tied atop the leaderboard at 1-over-par on the par-72 6,206 yard course. Maria Regina Gonzales (St. Mary's), Anna Parmerter, Pilar Echeverria (UINDY) and Mary Weinstein (Regis) all fired a 73. Maxi Roth (Missouri-St. Louis), Allison Davis (Henderson State) and Marie Coors (Saint Leo) are one-shot back at 2-over.

All totaled, 21 players are within four shots of the lead with 54-holes remaining.
