Keller arrested during hostage incident

A domestic incident turned into a hostage situation on Tuesday morning in southeast Bradley County.

According to the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office, the incident involved “an armed, barricaded male” on Weatherly Switch Road. Shortly after 11 a.m., the BCSO reported the barricaded subject had been arrested after a two-hour standoff.

Tyler Keller, 31, faces aggravated assault and kidnapping charges for holding his mother hostage with a knife to her throat. Both charges are felonies.

“Two hostages were safely recovered; however one of the hostages received multiple lacerations which are non-life threatening,” stated an email from BCSO Communications Director James Bradford.

Bradford said a public disorder call came in to the Bradley County/Cleveland 911 Center, but the caller couldn’t offer much information other than hearing yelling from the house.

“There was something happening that no one knew what was going on,” he said.

When BCSO officers arrived, they made contact with a person on the scene who “advised Mr. Keller was in the house … and was holding his mother in the master bedroom against her will with a knife,” Bradford said.

Law enforcement officers talked with Keller through the master bathroom door before breaking it down and deploying a Taser to incapacitate him. His mother was freed at that point.

“She was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries she sustained during the assault,” Bradford said.

Bradford said he is not aware of any additional charges that may be brought against Keller, but said two juveniles — identified as Keller’s 9- and 10-year-old children — are being medically assessed; at least one of the children allegedly showed signs of injury. Bradford confirmed that the Department of Children’s Services was called in to investigate.

“He has an extensive criminal background, he’s been charged with aggravated assault before,” Bradford said of Keller.

Keller was expected to be arraigned in General Sessions Court this morning.
