Heart health emphasized at Black Fox

Black Fox Elementary P.E. classes recently held their annual Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart events while working on jump rope and basketball skills. Students also competed in several events for prizes.

The events included tricks and endurance for jump rope, and hot shot, free throws, layups, and 3-point contests for basketball. Students raised money for research on heart disease, and qualified for levels of prizes according to the amount raised. The curriculum also consisted of educating students about healthy choices for taking care of our hearts.

The guidelines include: exercise, eat more fruits and vegetables, and never smoke. The theme this year was based on a scare squad to scare away heart disease. Squad characters included Jax the leader ninja, Charger, Disco, Rocky, Finnster, Petunia and Buddy Blaster.

Buddy blasts salt, Petunia advocates clean air through not smoking, Finnster encourages water over sugary drinks, Rocky encourages 60 minutes or more a day of exercise, and Disco encourages a variety of fruits and vegetables with a colorful plate. Charger glows in the dark and encourages getting heart healthy, so you can have a "glowing review" from the doctor, and a few eye rolls, too!

Students received each character as they reached each level of fundraising.
