Harold Vassey

Harold Donald Vassey, 84, of Cleveland, passed away on Friday, May 10, 2019.

He was born on Aug. 20, 1934, to the late Harold David Vassey and Jewell Swafford Vassey.

He was a lifelong resident of this area and he was a member of Candies Creek Baptist Church. He founded Vassey Lawn and Garden in 1969 and they just celebrated their 50th anniversary this year. He loved cooking, camping and traveling, especially to Disney World. Early in life, he also sang in many gospel quartets.

In addition to his mother and father, he was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 60 years, Shirleen Davis Vassey.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory, two children: Donna Matson (Pete) and David Vassey (Karen); grandchildren: Jon Matson (Jennifer), Brad Matson (Amanda), Meredith Holland (Michael), Jansen Vassey (Casey), Kelsey Vassey (Nathan Strong) and Brittani Still; great-grandchildren: Mallory Matson, Kate Matson, Collin Matson, Mary Mckenna Holland, Beckham Vassey and Cooper Still; and two great-grandchildren expected very soon.

The family will receive friends from 4 until 7 p.m. today,  May 14, 2019, at Candies Creek Baptist Church located at 294 Old Eureka Road, Charleston.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 7 p.m., following the visitation with Pastor Stan Gibson officiating.

Interment will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Cleveland, with Jansen Vassey, Jon Matson, Brad Matson, Michael Holland, Mark Smalling and Tim Davis serving as pallbearers.

The family would like to thank the following people for their love and care for Don during this difficult time: special friends George and Geneva Loudermilk and caregivers: Brenda Day, Brandi Thompson, Angela Anderson and Kim Hawkins.

You are invited to share a personal memory of Don, or your condolences with his family, at his online memorial located at www.companionfunerals.com.

Companion Funeral and Cremation Service and the Cody family are honored to assist the Vassey family with these arrangements.
