Getting better: BCSO boosts clearance rate

When I took office in 2018, I made a promise to get better every day. Getting better: BCSO boosts clearance rate

When I took office in 2018, I made a promise to get better every day. That was a promise I made to myself … to become a better leader, a better public servant, a better man, a better boss and a better sheriff; but it was also a promise I made to our community, to protect and serve our county better than the day before.

Part of that promise, I made on behalf of the entire Bradley County Sheriff’s Office, as a challenge for us to be better in all that we do each day. That challenge is one that each of the hardworking men and women who make up the BCSO have taken to heart, and for that I am grateful.

I am thankful to have proof of our improvements and the way that my officers and staff serve our community. That proof is in the stories that you, the public, share with us: stories of patrol officers showing acts of kindness, stories of SROs showing special care to students, stories of detectives going the extra mile to solve a case, stories of corrections officers helping those in need — the list goes on and on.

But the proof doesn’t end there. This past week, we received numerical proof of the BCSO’s improvement and service to our county. In an annual report of crime statistics issued by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the BCSO received an overall 68.56% clearance rate of all offenses reported in the year of 2019.

Compared to 2018 results, this clearance rate has increased by 2.17%, which I believe is just the beginning of the improvements we can expect to see from our exceptional officers and staff.

I believe that this 2% increase in cleared cases from 2018 to 2019 speaks to the incredible teamwork of our county’s law enforcement. From dispatchers to patrol officers, from detectives to corrections officers — we can’t do this job without each player doing his or her part and doing it well. This 68% clearance rate is a numerical representation of a team of dedicated public servants who are focused on getting better every single day.

It is moments like these that remind me why I wanted to be sheriff: to make Bradley County a better and safer place than before. So, thank you for allowing me to be your sheriff. Let’s keep getting better, together.
