Flames conclude tennis season

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Lee University tennis teams were eliminated from their respective Gulf South Conference Tournament Thursday afternoon.

The Lady Flames lost 5-0 to No. 10 Valdosta State University, while the Flames were beaten 5-1 by No. 37 University of North Alabama.

The Lady Flames end the season with an 8-7 record. The Flames finished with an 11-6 record.

VALDOSTA STATE 5

LADY FLAMES 0

At Lagoon Park, Valdosta State, ranked No. 10 nationally and seeded second, swept the doubles competition and earned wins at the third and fifth singles spots to record the win and advance to the GSC semifinals. The Lady Blazers improved to 15-5 on the season.

Anja Coksa and Daniela Barta were 8-2 winners over Krista Good and Nicole Shennett at No. 2 doubles. Bea Morales Hernandez and Anke Poncelet defeated Francesca Tondi and Marta Garcia-Nieto 8-3. Laura Ubeda and Estes Widdershoven held off Joanna Grzegrzolka and Laura Beth Hardesty for the 8-5 margin.

Barta recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win over Hardesty to go ahead 4-0. Sabrina Schmidt clinched the match for VSU with a 6-2, 6-0 defeat of Garcia-Nieto. The rest of the singles matches were left unfinished.

NORTH ALABAMA 5

FLAMES 1

At the O’Connor Tennis Center, North Alabama, seeded third and ranked No. 37, won two of the three double matches and three singles matches to improve its record to 14-4 and move on to the GSC Semifinals.

Miguel Garcia and Taylor Ausbon defeated Jake Okines and Boyd Blackburn, 8-5, to put the Lions on the scoreboard first. Daniel Prata and Wes Lemke teamed up to even the team score with an 8-6 win over Gustavo Girao and Ray Donovan. Max Druppel and Benjamin Poire outlasted Rhys Milne and Igor Schattan 9-7.

Blackburn fell 6-4, 6-4 to Ausbon at No. 6 singles. Okines was defeated by Garcia 6-3 and 6-4. Donovan won his opening set over Prata 6-1, then held on to win the second set, the individual match and the team match with a 7-5 second-set score. The final three matches were left unfinished.
