Cleveland State Community College is hosting Burgers and Badges to say thank you to all of the first responder professionals working in the area.

The event will be on Wednesday, Sept. 27, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of the George R. Johnson Cultural Heritage Center.

“This is our second Burgers and Badges event,” stated Rick Platz, CSCC development officer. “The idea originated from the faculty and staff at Cleveland State in an effort to recognize and honor the first responders throughout our community. We had over 300 people join us last year, and we’d love to double that to 600 or more this year. We have food and donations to feed 1,000 people this year.”

With the recent devastation in Houston, Platz wanted to remind everyone that a first responder doesn’t have to just be the typical police, fire and EMS.

“We want to make sure we think of everyone that that can mean the military, Red Cross, Hospital Emergency Room personnel. the Salvation Army, the District Attorney’s Office. We are very grateful for the service that first responders provide our community, so we want to make sure we include everyone.”

The lunch is free, but donations will be accepted. All the proceeds from the luncheon will go to support Cleveland State first responder programs. In addition to Bradley County, the college is also inviting first responders from CSCC’s entire service area of McMinn, Meigs, Monroe and Polk counties, as well.

Platz continued, “We are also very appreciative to our sponsors for this event — Alvin Word, SERVPRO of Bradley County, Cooke’s Food Stores, Southern Heritage Bank, Santek Waste Services, Tasteful Gatherings, and the CSCC Wildlife Society.”
