CPD officers pull driver from burning car

Two Cleveland Police Department officers saved a driver from a fiery crash on Thursday night.

According to CPD spokesman Sgt. Evie West, at 11:20 p.m. Thursday, Officer Matt Sharp was at the red light at 20th Street and Keith Street “when he heard the loud acceleration of a car and witnessed the car traveling east on 20th Street, toward him.”

West said the car swerved violently off the roadway into the opposing lane of traffic, then struck a light pole, with a concrete base, head on.

“Officer Sharp turned his vehicle around and proceeded to the crash site, at which time he noticed the car caught fire,” West said, adding Sharp and Officer Geoffrey Humberd “removed the driver from the burning car and summoned the assistance of the fire department and EMS.

“Due to the quick response of Officer Sharp, Officer Humberd and the Cleveland Fire Department, this man’s life was saved,” West said.
